IN MEMORY OF
MICK HOPSON R.I.P.
On the 11th Oct 2010 my best friend Mick Hopson was tragically killed in a road accident. Mick, a sensible and very experienced motorcyclist was riding to work when he was in collision with a car. He is, and always will be missed by a great many people. I know how much I miss him, and how this affected my life. I cannot even imagine how much his loss has affected the lives of his wife and family.
For many years I was a qualified driving instructor. I spent years explaining to my pupils how important it is to give driving 110% concentration. I taught them to pay particular attention to vulnerable road users, (being a motorcyclist, I am one of them). I explained to them that when approaching a parked vehicle they should look under the vehicle for moving feet, a clue that there could be a child between the parked vehicles etc. etc. I drilled it into them the fact that every single day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year, on average 6 people die on our roads. I was passing on to my pupils statistics! I suppose even to me, it was still just a statistic. It is not until one of those 6 people is someone you actually know, someone you can actually put a name and a face to that it really hits you HARD.
I always kind of assumed that Mick and I would grow into old men, sit drinking coffee and talking about the old motorbikes that we used to own. Sadly this was not to be, on Monday morning the 11th Oct, Mick became one of those six destined to lose their lives that day.
Anyone that knew Mick would tell you the same. Mick would do anything for anybody. Nothing was too much trouble. In the years that I knew him he did anything I asked, and I know that he was the same with everyone. Mick was one of this worlds genuine 'Nice Guys'
It was while I was at Mick's funeral that I decided I just had to do something. I needed to do something for someone other than myself. At the time I had no idea what. It was a few weeks later that I came up with the idea of doing a motorcycle ride from Lands end to John o groats for charity in memory of my best friend Mick. We both loved bikes and it seemed rather fitting that I should do something on my bike.
On the 30th May 2011 my wife Rachel and I will be setting off on our BMW from our home in Liversedge, West Yorks to ride down to Lands end. From lands end we are riding straight up to John o Groats. Then returning back home to West Yorks. According to my PC that's a round trip of approx. 2000 miles. I would like to thank the kind sponsor has promised to pay my fuel bill for the Lands end to John o groats section of my trip which will be approx. £200, many thanks Rick.
Yorkshire Air Ambulance as a charity
The Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) is an independent charity that needs to raise £7,200 per day in order to keep both of Yorkshire’s air ambulances maintained and in the air.
The generous donations we receive ensure that we can provide a state of the art lifesaving service that has saved so many lives across Yorkshire.
As a charity the YAA plays a vital role in a 999 situation, alongside the other emergency services.
Yorkshire has a vast and beautiful landscape that not only includes isolated and rural locations but also major motorways and populated cities.
Whenever a patient is carried by the YAA they will only be approximately ten minutes from the nearest hospital and approximately fifteen minutes from the most appropriate hospital to treat their specific injury. Receiving specialist treatment so soon after injury is proven to save lives.
